Mind game playing spirits.

3.5 ready!

This spirit appears shadowy and insubstantial. You can almost see directly through it. It appears to be dressed in old, tattered clothing and constantly moans incoherent things. Its eyes glow with hate and madness.

Mindful spirits look just as they did when they were slain by another mindful spirit. The only difference is that the have a ghostly, incorporeal image. Mindful spirits like to play games with their foes, but just like all undead, they hate the living. They have fun with their prey before they kill it.

Mindful spirits move in complete silence and they usually haunt the place were they were killed. There is never one mindful spirit, they are usually found in pairs.

Mindful spirits do not speak, but the moan continuously. If they do choose to speak, they do so telepathically. They can speak the languages they had in their previous life.

Combat
Mindful spirits attack in pairs, so they mainly focus on one foe at a time. This usually tends to be the fighter in the group, since they want him/her on their side as soon as possible. Mindful spirits make incorporeal touch attacks to their foes. If one of these attacks hits, the victim must make a Fortitude save (DC 17) or loose 1d4 temporary Wisdom. If a victim is reduced to 0 or lower wisdom, they die and raise in 1d6 rounds as a Mindful Spirit. This save is Wisdom based. A mindful spirit's incorporeal touch attack is considered magical for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction.

Spell Like Abilities (Sp): At will- Dispel Magic, Invisibility, Ray of Enfeeblement (DC 14). 1/day: Lightning Bolt (DC 16). All of these spells are cast as a 6th level sorcerer.

Mindful Presence (Su): If a foe has been drained of half their Wisdom score by the touch attacks of at least one mindful spirit, they are frozen in a catatonic state for 1d4 rounds. During this time, the Mindful spirit possess the foe and gains all their attacks, special attacks, abilities, half their current hit points and current memorized spells (in the case of a sorcerer or bard, the current number of spells left in the day to be cast). During this time, the spirit looses all its other abilities except being incorporeal (it turns the person incorporeal). Spell resistance applies to this abilty. The victim can make a Will Save (DC 17) to avoid this effect, however they suffer a -2 penalty to the saving throw. This save is Wisdom based.

Undead are immune to mind influencing effects and to poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, and necromantic effects. They are ignore mind influencing effects. They are not subject to critical hits, subdual damage, ability damage, ability drain, or energy drain. They are immune to anything that requires a Fortitude save (unless it also works on objects). Undead Spellcasters use their Charisma for Concentration checks. They are not at risk from death from massive damage, but when they are reduced to 0 hit points they are destroyed. Most undead have darkvision with a range of 60 feet. Undead can not be raised.

Because their familiarity with spells, they have spell resistance 18. Also, being undead and incorporeal they are immune to cold and lightning attacks. They are also much harder to turn by clerics. They cannot be controlled by evil clerics.

Society
The ritual used to make a Mindful Spirit has been lost for centuries, but these spirits remain in the world. They are usually found in graveyards, crypts, mines and any other place undead usually occupy. Mindful spirits usually remain hidden until they learn as much as possible from their prey. They also like to attack by surprise or from behind walls where their victims cannot attack back.

This creature has been play tested.
This is not a kender type creature.
