Ring of True Hearing

Description: This ring, made of intertwined silver braids, has a small steel
carving of a bird on the top face.
History: Called the Ring of Clarion Song by Branchala's followers, this
ring is made of intertwined silver braids and has a small steel
carving of a bird on the top face. Created by a kender cleric of
Branchala who had gone deaf during the Third Dragon War, the
ring has a sparkling sheen, which will never dull. Said cleric,
whose name is lost to history, prayed to his god to once more
be able to hear the music of the songbirds. Branchala, pitying
his sad priest and wanting to help, enchanted the ring to
remedy the wearer's deafness. However, he also made it
improve hearing so that it would be useful for the cleric's
descendants as well. The ring's use, however, only applies to
those kender of the cleric's lineage. All others feel their hearing
heightened a little, but it's hardly enough to help them much.
Non-kender cannot use this item.
How it Works: In AD&D terms, the wearer of the ring can only be surprised on
a result of 1 with the surprise roll. Even then, he will not lose
any dexterity bonus to AC. In addition, the kender always gains
a +30% bonus to a detect noise action, and the detect noise
action can be increased to 100% by the ring. It also can restore
hearing to the deaf person as long as they are wearing the ring.
In SAGA terms, the ring of hearing can increase a normal sense
of hearing to a heightened one. If the kender has a heightened
sense of hearing, any perception action involving hearing is
trump. Also, any action to avoid surprise is trump for the wearer
of the ring. If a kender has somehow gone deaf or has a
diminished sense of hearing (unlikely with SAGA rules, but
possible) his hearing functions as a normal sense.
